Matthew 21:1-111 Palm Sunday "Hosanna to the Son of David" 03-24-2024

Hosanna to the Son of David
When misguided enthusiasm leads to shattered dreams and bitter resentment.
We begin this sermon by looking back at a couple of stories that occur just before ...
Jesus and His disciples make their journey to Jerusalem that lead up to Jesus' Triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday.

Matthew 19:23-28 The Misguided Enthusiasm of the Rich, Young, Ruler
Matthew 20:17-19 The Misguided Enthusiasm of the Disciples
Matthew 21:1-11 The Misguided Enthusiasm of the Multitudes at the Triumphal Entry

Each of those stories reveal how we can approach God with misguided enthusiasm (that's rooted in our own misguided expectations of what God should do for us) that result in deep disappointment that, in each story, leads to the person / people abandoning Jesus, and in some cases they do so with bitter resentment.

We are often like the rich young ruler, the ambitious disciples, and the fickle crowds who love Jesus (for what we think He should do for us) and then abandon Him when things don't go the way we expected, planned, or desired.

May God help us to be faithful to King Jesus who was willing to leave heaven's throne behind and go to the cross for us.
